October 29, 2019 – At a meeting in Baku earlier this month, Arif Mammadov, Director of the State Civil Aviation Agency (SCAA) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, personally thanked The Wicks Group (TWG) Managing Director Glenn Wicks and TWG Partner Ekaterina Grimes for the firm’s continuing contributions to Azerbaijan’s high level of aviation safety oversight.
Mr. Mammadov’s appreciation came after Azerbaijan received the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)’s Council President Certificate during the 40th session of ICAO Assembly in Montreal in September. During the session, Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, President of the ICAO Council, recognized Azerbaijan for both its strong progress in aviation safety oversight and its ongoing commitment to the effective implementation of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices for operational safety.
The Assembly session, which was held from September 24 to October 4, 2019 at its headquarters in Montreal (Canada), was attended by 184 ICAO Member countries as well as 70 international organizations, bringing together over 2600 participants. The session, which is held every three years, addressed current issues of international civil aviation’s activity and the ways of its development in the near future. This session was commemorative and marked the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention) and the establishment of ICAO.
TWG has provided aviation safety-related technical assistance to the Republic of Azerbaijan for more than 10 years. During that period, Azerbaijan successfully obtained and sustained its US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) IASA Category 1 (compliant) rating, and Azerbaijan flag carriers Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) and Silk Way West Airlines respectively launched direct passenger and cargo flights to airports in the United States. TWG looks forward to continuing its longstanding collaboration with Azerbaijan for many years to come.
